Acoustic Electric Bass Guitar - Another Way to Show Your Bottom!

There is a bit of a problem in the definition of acoustic electric bass guitars. An acoustic bass could be an upright string bass, you know the one that Tom used to play in the Tom and Jerry cartoons :o). Or whilst smoking a last late night cigarette at the jazz club, the big guy playing a slow bass. I am sure you know what I mean. The true acoustic bass guitar is what it says, an acoustic guitar with 4 strings tuned an octave below the top four strings on a conventional guitar.

The problem lies with the fact that an acoustic bass guitar is quite relative to its six string cousin, and in order to be heard will invariably need to be amplified. Hence, most acoustic bass guitars are really acoustic electric bass guitars after all.

However, if we consider hollow bodied bass guitars as electric acoustic bass guitars, then we are not really talking about acoustic bass guitars at all. These types of bass guitars, as used by the Beatles in the early 60's for example, were always designed to be electric, but with a hollow body. The hollow body may well have had an impact on the sound produced, but the guitar was not really an acoustic bass.

Fender also produced some hollow bodied bass guitars as well, but they never reached the popularity of say the ES six string series of conventional guitars from Gibson.

Whilst looking at acoustic electric bass guitars, perhaps you should also take a look at a Fender acoustic electric guitar as well?
