IMHO, McCoy Tyner trumps them both. Watch as he mouths the lines he's playing during his solo. He translating the sounds in his head directly into his instrument. This is the true mark of a master. His lines in the tune are very clear, precise, and lyrical. It like he's speaking to you. Not to say that Trane and Dolphy aren't on the same level - they are - they're just not bringing it like McCoy. Just my opinion...

Dolphy is the one who made Coltrane such an avant garde player in the early 60s, and a lot of people didn't like that about Coltrane - they wanted to hear more of Giant Steps and I Hear A Rhapsody and stuff he did with Miles Davis. Personally, I like his 50s and his 60s work though Naima is a little crazy for me. And yes, McCoy Tyner is the man. He's my favorite jazz pianist.

I see where you're coming from but Dolphy is a very good complement to Coltrane's sound. In other words you don't necessarily want someone sounding like Coltrane if they're gonna be playing a song together for 30 minutes. You need someone with a different sound so they can trade and refresh each other.

Please don't anyone take offense to this, but I think it was a bad idea to put Coltrane and Dolphy together. IMO, Coltrane makes Dolphy sound absolutely terrible. His solo just didn't seem to make any sense. Coltrane's solo was amazing though, and McCoy Tyner is my hero.

While Impressions does follow the same structure, you're a little bit off on the Blue Train comment... Blue Train actually precedes Kind of Blue by 2 years. Blue Train from 1957 and Kind of Blue from 1959. On Blue Train Coltrane still sounds like he's working around the idea of superimposing as many chords as possible over a single given bar line... the whole "sheets of sound" approach... whereas after Kind of Blue he got into the heavier modal approach... A Love Supreme, Impressions, etc...

Blue Train came out in 1957, Kind of Blue wasn't out until 1959... Coltrane's basis for Blue Train sits more alongside his work on superimposing extended chords on top of a standard set of changes (in Blue Train's case an Eb blues). What Ira Gitler called "sheets of sound." The modal stuff came a bit later on, though...

remember too, what you are hearing is a rehersal. The film is a compilation of filming done during the course of the rehersals. there is no complete film of the entire run through heard on the audio. In fact they had to splice some film from an earlier award presentation (mustaki and monnot from her award for "milord") to make the film last as long as the audio. so style and quality of playing not quite same as a true public performance

I've always appreciated the fact that throught the years, he never lost or changed his unmistakable sound. Sweet sounds of an era gone by, far different than the world be live in now. All it takes is a few notes, and bam.. I'm daydreaming with a huge grin on my face. In frames 135-145 of this video, I'm sitting here with two other people that could almost swear that stephanes profle is of that of django in his later years. What a prfound touché! I have responded with my video, not to compare it with this work, but as a demonstration of how I am using digital technology to capture, edit and distribute an analog "event", in this case three simple LED toy spinning fans. This was shot on a cheap Nikon still camera, on video setting, in the darkness of my bathroom, and combined with a piece of music that I created on my MacIntosh. I hope you enjoy it. I think it's more likely that digital technology will prove to be a shortcut to developing better analog technology. Analog is just about as "real time" as you can get, it just takes a shitload of knobs and dials to manipulate the electrical impulses. Whereas a digital system does most of the dial turning for you.

Ahh Perfection !!!!! I had the privlige to attend a clinic @ the U of Miami about the time this video was made. At the time I was a local 14yr old drummer. The chance to hear Joe and meet him was a moving experience. One I spoke with him about a couple of yeras ago. I told him my late Dad and I refered to that clinic fondly for the next 40yrs and I had spent those 40yrs trying to develop my right foot to do what he does.

I had the honour of spending an afternoon with Mr. Morello at the start of the year. He's a lovely, funny and extraordinarily humble man - and simply the best drummer and drum teacher I've ever met. He's inspired me to practice more than I've ever practised before and given me a lifetimes worth of stuff to practice! I think, sadly, he might be one of the last of his generation, so it's great that these videos are getting so many views!

Já agoram, e para que saibas uma bica é algo bem português/alfacinha e a palavra lixbona não se deve a qualquer nova invenção modernaça do messenger, mas uma designação toponímica que data da idade média, e que na documentação e chancelarias régias da dinastia de Borgonha e Avis é bastante usada, como aliás a abreviatura lix ou LX. no dia em que souberes paleografia vem ter comigo!!

Originally, there was a brief sequence before the opening title, featuring Alvin doing something "naughty" {i.e., leading a bull into a china shop; pulling a tablecloth away from a huge pile of dishes; operating a steam shovel with a "wrecking ball"; handing Dave a "bouquet" of helium balloons, watching him float away}- ending with Dave yelling, "AL-VIN-N-N-N-N...!", dovetailing into the opening title. Yes it did, but my comment referred to the year it first ran on Saturday mornings. In 1961 it debuted as a prime time show geared to kids and adults. Hence the "blasted its way into kids hearts." The prime time debut never caught on but the Sat. morning showings did.

p.s. guess most know this, but Ross Sr. makes a great cameo in Hitchcock's Rear Window.. he plays the "musician/composer" who plucks chords and throws great parties. He was a good composer with a few minor hits in the 50's before strking Gold with Alvin and its merchandising.

This opening BLASTED its way into kids' hearts in 1963 (when it ran Saturday a.m.). Despite lukewarm primetime success, the show had a tremendous cultural impact on kids (Alvin clothes, lunchboxes, costumes, etc. etc.). TAS preceded the popular music-video based Scooby-Doo, Josie/Pussycats, and yes, Archie shows by a decade (and MTV by 2!). There was nothing like this show, and the sheer quality of the production and music (as seen here) attests to that. RB Sr. was a genius.

Actually, I wish the show would come to DVD. But I hate to say it's not too likely. But many of the musical segments on The Alvin Show appeared on two Chipmunks Sing-Along VHS tapes that were released in 1993. They're found on Amazon. That's probably the closest we'll get to having the show on DVD [or VHS], even though the 8-minute episode sequences and the Clyde Crashcup segments aren't in them.

Tedericopera: to play Shakespeare you must drop any accent? That's stupid. Accents are relative. For example, in this clip, Sean Connery has an English accent, which sounds weird to Candadians, Americans, Austrlians, Irish, etc. Besides, Macbeth is supposed to be Scottish, so in this play it would make sense for Connery to have kept his Scottish accent.
