Hi, i am doing a presentation on the film 2001: Space odyssey soon. and i have to choose a 5 min extract and present about the film techniques used about it. it is a requirement of the IB diploma.there are 2 great scenes to talk about, so im wondering should i choose the first time we encounter SPACE in the movie (when the blue danube is palying) or the scene when we first encounter Discovery, up to the point when Hal says "just a moment.. just a moment" .. ? thank you in advance !

He's good, but Hitchcock was more consistently brilliant. Orson Welles at his best was probably as good or better than both of them, but he was more more erratic. You could also throw in Kurosawa, Truffaut, Fellini, Bergman... My main problem with Kubrick is that he was a cold technician. Just my opinion, of course.

I saw this movie 40-years ago, on the big screen in Manhattan, in 3-projector CINERAMA, a gigantic, curved screen. It was beyond awesome, and in sterophonic sound. I was 7-years old, and a huge sci-fi TV and movie fan. It stands over 40-years later as the singular evocative lieterary SCI FI in existence. You really feel you are in outer space, and the SPFX hold up well today, and today our technology even surpasses what was in the movie.

I had already been a big LOST IN SPACE and STAR TREK fan. This movie really was accurate, scientifically, and predicted much of what we have today. I thought this when I saw it! I studied a little bit of astronomy and I thought.. did he go through a wormhole? This is fascinating! He saw himself aging quickly, .. I didn't know that aliens were supposed to be observing him, but it was brilliant regardless. I mean the whole element of lightspeed/life cycles/rebirth. always been beyond fascinating to me. When I saw this I just immediately knew that's what he was replicating. Usually scifi is fixated on gimmicks, but this was theoretical beauty

Well, what can definately be observed is the big bang and the expansion of the universe and the forming of galaxies as well as suns. Then we fly above above some kind of valley and later the ground seems fluid. I interpret that Bowman really receives the full knowledge of everything and although he has all the knowledge about the universe, his existence is still not unlimited and he dies. But the film leaves it open if death really is the end or just another step into a larger world.

Echoes was allegedly written by Pink Floyd when they got an advanced copy of the film. The story I guess is that it was written as a soundtrack of sorts to Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite, which explains why he timing it so precise, and it seems to fit perfectly.
