This video is rubbish. Everyone knows the difference between a 17 and a 24 mm lens. A comparisn would be quality of both lenses at 24mm 35mm etc. The 17-40 is by far sharper in the corners than the 16-35 Version 1. Thats why the version II came out. But nothing of that is covered in the video. The 17-40 is a clear buy.

I bought the 40D with 17-85 IS I think it's a failure expensive non L serie lens! It's heavy, it's build quality isn't that good as I feel it... and it's expensive with no hood?! and price tag is almost as 17-40 L! doo'h?! well thanks Gordon, I've read the reviews and I think im gonna buy this 17-40 and I already have 70-200 L IS 2.8 I think it cover up all my needs!

I have def. thought about the future of DSLR's and in a few years perhaps all will be full frame type sensors like the 5d, that has me looking at EF lens more closely then EF-S.

Depends how slow a shutter speed you think you'll be using. You could of course alternatively go for the EF-S 17-85mm or EF-S 17-55mm models, both with IS... feel free to discuss this further on the cameralabs forums if you like...

hey there, awesome reviews... one thing: im thinking of buying the 17-40mm to use it on my canon 40d. ive already got the 70-300mm IS lense and now fear that the missing IS will ruin my shots with the 17-40mm. Though that lense does not provide the stabilizer is it really worth buying it without being frustrated afterwards due to some blurry shots ?

Craft, if you use one of the kit lens for a few month and then swicht to one of those deluxe lens you will regret big times to got the kit as sold, I recoment to every one buy just the body and upgrade the lens even just a little bit. Actually the lens of the STD kit doesn't reflect the quality of the camera itself.

They're completely different cameras - the 400D is an older entry-level model, whereas the 40D is a semi-pro model; you may also want to compare the 450D and 1000D as these are Canon's newer budget models. I can't spend much time on Youtube, but I'd recommend reading the reviews for all the models you're interested in at cameralabs . com first (especially the verdict pages), and if you have any more Qs, feel free to ask in the cameralabs forums... Hello there gypsumF, you're probably long gone and not able to answer this but I am looking to buy a camera, that can take DoF/noise reduction, and all that jazz. Hello phenexus, I haven't used the EF-S 60mm macro lens as it is not compatible with the cameras I have. I use the MP-E65 f/2.8 1-5 x Macro and the EF100mm F2.8 USM Macro. However, from what I have seen on the web, many people speak very highly of it, and at £350 it is reasonably priced. I will get the chance to test it out in June, so feel free to email me after the 10th of that month and I will be able to give you a better idea then. My email is j AT mytinygarden DOT com

Hello anon69, Indeed, I don't! What I would say is that I can find few faults with three Canon cameras I do use. Family/friends have several models too, and again no complaints from any quarter... So, would I recommend the 400D? Only on the strength of others in the Canon range! But I can't say definitively that it's good or bad, for the very reason you have pointed out. :)

for those on a budget: you could pick up a film SLR with a selection real cheap (I even found one in a bin) and get some really high quality pictures. I'm sure that the Canon Eos 400D is capable of getting superb result, and many professional photographers will have got great results with far less.

this camera is actually really gud, i use the same one myself, i only got a single little problem with it, its about the blur in low light or even in normal light without flash, the pictures get really blurry. and the only thing to solve it is to get an IS lens kit (image stablerliser ) which is sold separately, im planning to get on myself pretty, the pictures created from the 400D is really nice, very sharp..thats ONLY if you shoot with flash or using a tripod. hope this helps.. ciao

Dunno about 400d I have a 20d and its a brilliant camera!'[I'd well recommend it. from reveiws I'd guess these cameras are all good. Get a decent lens though. you cannot hope to to take professional looking photos without a really good quality lens. The idea is that the(usually expensive) lens survives numerous changes in cameras but is still good to go. the 50mm EF 1.4 aperture looks good to me.

Well, the lenses are very expensive of course. But what's the point in whining I have the 400D with the kit lens and also a Sigma 70-300, I'm happy with this for now. Incredible image quality even with this. I'm saving up for some nice Canon lenses, saving is the only way to afford this stuff. The lenses aren't that cheap to manufacture also, think about the development and the cost of the materials also consider that these lenses are often made in the western world.

Get the 17-85 kit if you can it has more zoom and is better in low light situations,] Its MUCH better than the 18-55. Get a reversing ring for macro shots ,close ups. The other lens I'd recommend is the new 70-300mm with "IS" Image stabilzation NOT the old 75-300 but these lenses are expensive. The old EF 75-300 is good for extra zoom at mid range though and relatively cheap but has to be held totally still.

I own a 400D and I thought it was a pretty good review...Even though I knew the features, it was a good watch and the guy knows what he's talking about. Furthermore, "either D40, its expected successor, 400D ..." Please explain to me why a NIKON D40 is the successor to a CANON 400D? Normally I would put this down to a simple typo, but seeing as you "have experience with 350D, 5D and some higher-end Canon 35mm EOS..." I assume you know something I don't. Read your comment before you post moron

The 17-85mm which you can get with the kit is a great all round lens and well worth the extra money if you can afford it. Its miles better than the cheaper 18-55 one bundled with the kit. If you notice at bottom corner of still shots those lenses hes using are very expensive. The canon better lenses cost more than the camera easily.

welcome to photography. they make lenses very high quality so they last for the next 4 cameras you buy, the idea is you spent $1200 (so about 600 pounds) on the lens so when it comes time to replace your camera you have to buy that brand of camera again.
