I don't think Oscar was on par with Art, Oscar even said so himself. He said that he was getting cocky showing off in front of girls. So his father to keep him grounded made him listen to an Art record. After listening to it Oscar gave up the piano for months and wouldn't play in Art's presence

The problem was simple. Nat was an awesome pianist that could sing. But, he sang very well and that was what the record buying public wanted. So, after 1951, the King Cole Trio jazz pianist era was really over and Nat "King" Cole singer era was fully born. Capitol never recorded Nat on piano after 1956. So, these live shots are the only way we get to hear how he progressed on the instrument through the 1950's and 60's. Such a shame.

I can say that Nat King Cole was one of the top jazz/comp players of all time. Few knew his amazing talent not only as a vocalist, but an extraordinarilly accomplished classical and jazz pianist. His technique suggests a classical background - but his understanding of the chord voicings is simply amazing. Nat clearly has a lifetime of work under his hands. SO very, very, very rare.
