This is a very good instructional video. I want to learn continental knitting so that I can knit and purl faster. I've been practicing for a few days but my hands are resisting the change! I still can't get the thread tension right, my stitches are very messy looking. How much longer before knitting continental feels more natural?

What I did when I began was to wrap the yarn twice around your pinky instead of trying to clamp down on it. My knitting was too tight, but it was fine for a beginning. It will help the yarn stay on your index. With time, keeping it on your index will be easier, intuitive, and you will be able to remove the extra loop around your pinky and knit looser. I knit a whole scarf "too tightly" just to learn and there was no harm done !

i just wanted to say that a beginner who just went out and bought her first set of circular needle to attempt to make a hat your continental method is the best, i have been searching youtube for 3 days looking for a video that gave a clear and easy to follow method of the continental and your's was the best. i have added it to my favorites and cant wait to complete my project. thank you very much!!!!

I disagree with Poopy43. I learned and used the throw method for many many years. Recently, though, I forced myself to knit the Puzzle Pillow blanket using only continental. Further practice came in knitting a fair isle sweater. Now I find myself just picking up and knitting using continental without even thinking about it. Oh, and there's no way you can knit as quickly with the throw method. There's an inarguable economy of movement with continental that can't be beat! Thanks for the video!

beatlegirl, just knit however you are most comfortable. If continental is awkward for you, stay with the American/throw method. Give continental another try, but don't frustrate yourself if it doesn't feel right to you. The most important thing is that you enjoy your knitting, no matter which method you use.

I tried this way, and it IS much better! I always wondered how the left index finger could serve "as a shuttle" when the yarn always fell off it... I had the yarn over that finger, under the middle & ring fingers, and over the pinky. The key is to get the yarn, as you said, over the first 3 fingers. Too bad I learned from a book years ago. Imagine the time I could have saved had I seen your video back then.

Ok, I must be doing something wrong. I tried to follow this to a T, and replayed t several times to get the yarn & fingers in the right places. This is BY FAR the most frustrating method for me, the yarn keeps coming off my index finger no matter how hard I clamp down with my pinky, and I can't get the yarn to stay to the back of the needle. Everyone else seems to love this, and while the video is very good at explaining the method, I'm still unable to do it without screaming in frustration.

I knit both ways but am not a fan of continental knitting. Any experienced knitter does not throw the wool over as demonstrated. Looked like a beginner to me. The wool is hooked over the right index finger and ring finger keeps the tension. Where continental becomes more complicated is when you are attempting a variety of stitches rather than knit and purl. I find my continental is tighter not looser. Am just as fast using either method. I think you prefer whatever method you learn first.

For my second knitting project, I wanted to do a ribbed scarf. I knew it was going to be forever in the traditional method. With the continental method ribbing goes so quick and no problems with the yarn ! Had to watch the vidéo 3 times over to get the hang, and am still slightly heasentant with my fingers, but I'll have a scarf full to get comfortable.

Wow I think this looks like how my Nana used to knit & she was from Eastern Europe. It looked different than how I see other people knit know. Do you think they use the throwing or continental method in Ukraine? She showed me some knitting as a child, I've never been able re-learn it since. She is not here now, & I would love to knit in the style of my Nana. I would feel like I was doing her proud :-) Thanks for posting. What is the American style knitting called?

This is absolutely the best continental knitting video I've ever seen. Like many other people I've seen tons of instructions and none has ever been this clear. This is the only one I've seen that explains the correct way to hold the yarn, so add me to the list of people who can finally PURL easily. :D Not to mention in 10 minutes she showed every skill you need to know to knit pretty much anything. I hope Lorilee Beltman knows how helpful this is!

It is easiest to make blankets on a long double-pointed needle (two points with a long, flexible cable inbetween). The diameter of the needles and the length of the needle are unrelated.
