it's not a matter of incompetence it's a matter of indifference. Not once have the civilian casualites in Iraq been mentioned during this election. Most people don't care and those that do would be branded unamerican for saying as much. I'm a former US Soldier with PTSD, when I brought up the dead civilians in counseling I was asked why their deaths bothered me more than my comrades. The question was ridiculous to me; we volunteered to live with war, the civilians did not.

However, in reality, Dan White (the one who killed Harvey Milk) was found dead in his car after committing suicide from exhaust asphyxiation shortly after the trial. Neutronstar64, you are confusing two of Bogles songs: 'The Band Played Waltzing Matilda' is the song he wrote about Aussie experience in Gallipoli(Liam Clancys version on youtube is very good). Eleven Willie McBride's died in the First World War (see Commonwealth War Graves Site). Because of the name, people assume the soldier was Irish but most of the Willie McBrides killed in WW1 were with Scottish Regiments. This version of the song was a massive hit in Ireland in 1979.

According to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website, there were 11 William Mc Brides killed in WW1 (and several other 'W' Mc Bride's). None of them were 19 and most were with Scottish Regiments. So I suppose he did exist, but I expect the writer, Eric Bogle, was inspired by the WW1 graveyards he saw rather than an individual grave.
