Weckyl = melodic cymbal work with nice double strokes(but on drum set?...really...come on)favorite song like solo Vinnie = super nice chops with the ability to move both ways on the set. plus ebony heads because thats hilarious. really nice sounding kit nonetheless. Gadd = by far the funnest to watch plus an amzing feel for the groove. probably the drummer who had the most fun.

How about Elvin Jones for influential drummer alive. Or did he die? I mean, Elvin pretty much lay the foundation for the latin style of drumming that Gadd has taken to another level. I don't disagree that Gadd is a major influence, but to say the most that is still alive is a bit over the top. But that is my opinion.

In your case Gadd's feeling doesnt go with my taste as much as it does with yours . what matters the most is that you enjoy what you listen to, regardless of what others think.

I have to say that Gadd was by far the most musical drummer out of the three in this instance, in my opinion. Vinnie has great technique and Weckl has a very fluid style but Gadd has such a feel, every time! Yes perhaps his licks are overfamiliar by now, but they're incredibly original and have been imitated by everyone since.

Vinnie n Weckl are more skilled than Mr. Gadd (with respect). Yeah that cowbell was nice and all and the army solo but there's more to drumming that that and anyway he does that all the time. When he runs out of ideas, he just goes mozambique on the cowbell. It was all right until he overused paradiddles, cowbell n that lick he does all the time which sometimes sounds misplaced(not that it sounds out of time). Vinnie uses displacement, polyrhythms, borrowed time but they sound well placed

Gadd has some nice licks n very useful ones n he's good 'cause he does very well what a drummer is suppose to do; time keeping and accompaniment. He got fame with his latin grooves... here everybody went nuts when they heard the cowbell used with a good paradiddle, hehe. But for my taste, VInnie & Weckl r better, Vinnie in particular. & I also think that in technique VInnie>Weckl>Gadd. Gadd is all that but I dont like what goes through his mind when phrasing and combining good ideas any more

I used to like Gadd, I got bored of his way of playing and I got more interested in other drummers like Weckl and Colaiuta. Gadd is a very different drummer. his approach to the kit is like weird, not that I dont understand rhythm figures, Is just that I dont like... some of his phrases, how he places his ideas, some of his ideas are weird. But that makes his very unique and I cant deny he got something to offer to the world of percussion and he has a big name.

perhaps in this occasion Vinnie played to impress people and he also wanted to see how much his technique had improved... but he's so much more skilled, He was probably into technique and speed in those days (i mean around that week, not back in the decade). His drumming is not always like that, he even plays simple stuff with great taste. sometimes he overplays when they let him.

Growing up in Rochester,Irondequoit specifically,I've had the pleasure of meeting Steve Gadd on more than one occasion.He has always stopped to answer questions and is a pretty cool guy.He gave me a pair of sticks after a show.A fellow drummer friend of mine did some remodeling work at his home in Pittsford a few years ago.Steve GAVE him a custom made Yamaha Signature snare drum.Just an all around great guy.

They're both amazing musicians. But I think that even Carey would have to admit his chops aren't as mind boggling as Colaiuta's, and his discography isn't as impressive. I bet more people know of DC and tool has a much bigger fan count.- More 'people' may know about Tool than they do VC, but more 'drummers' know about and respect VC than they do DC. DC is a nothing on the drum meter compared to VC. I highly doubt DC can even read a drum chart and he sure as hell wouldn't be able to hang in Chick Corea or Herbie Hancock's drum chair, that would be laughable. Peuknee, you need to listen to more VC, he was incredible even in the 70's

I understand your point. But I'm not sure you really grasp who these guys are. We are all creators, and create different stuff. Do you really think these guys just read music and play it. They do that alot, because thats how they make money. But The stuff these guys compose is what makes them who they are. Comparing is not nessecary-- I agree and shows a lack of knowledge about drumming and the people doing it. Danny Carey couldn't do the gig's VC does (even if his life depended on it). VC can play 'anything' Carey can. They're only 5 years apart in age. At 20 years old VC could out play Carey at his current 47.

Carey,Peart,Bonham,Portnoy,Barker are all good drummers. But Vinnie,Gadd, Weckl,Mayer,Carlock,Chambers are on a different level.Any one of those guys could play that rock stuff in their sleep, on a bad day. But its their swing, fusion abilities, chops,cleanliness, and flexibility that makes them so incredible.The stuff they can do will BLOW your mind.You just have to expand your horizons.Any one of those guys first mentioned would say the same thing.Don't get your panties in a bunch rock guys.

theres a reason vinnie c is asked to do the work he does. Because hes that damn good. The guys chops, grooves, are plain sick. guys like danny carey dont belong in the same sentence as such drummers like vinnie c,steve smith, bozzio etc. Comparing is not nessecary when you got guys like vinnie c playing, because no one compares too such a player, he has his own style, his own sound, thats what makes vinnie c.

I'm sure Danny Carey himself would feel very in debt to Billy Cobham (mahavishnu), and would find that comparison very inappropriate on behalf of Mr. Cobham. However, even though Tool may not have the virtuosity that Mahavishnu Orchestra had/has, they're running on what they got, and they're doing pretty damn well for themselves. I don't think they're trying to be masters of odd meters. It's their expressions, which coincidentally happen to be odd meters. Funny how that happens.

How do you know?What makes you so sure that Carey couldn't knock out a number of world/jazz beats as sick as vinnie/gadd/weckl? You have no basis for that comment-there are alot of drummers who posses massive potential but rather play in their bands rather than do session work. Vinnie is only asked because he is known as a session player, whereas Carey may say he's not interested in sessions. Please note, vinnie is possibly my fav drummer and i don't listen to any tool or Carey for that matter.

i have always found weckl to be a more solo oriented player. colaiuta on the other hand, gives the band exactly what it needs. weckl is an incredible drummer, but colaiuta in my mind is perfect. i dont think anyone will ever play like him

Saw the Chick Corea Elektric Band with Dave Weckl play this song at The Blue Note back in December and Dave was just on fire!!! Yes, his intensity is infectious. It makes me want to go bash some funky grooves right now......but, I agree, he overplayed in that he strayed from the form of the song going out on some wild tangent fills and parts that did not mesh with the rest of the band. But, oh to be able to play like!!!!!

i don't know how old you are but you've definately got something 2 look 4ward 2. i've heard mike clark interview someone and their general consensus was that drummers really peak in their 60s. i understand where you're coming from as far as not being where you should be. i stopped for 10 yrs and just started playing @ my wifes encouraging (mainly cause i was driving her crazy) 4 years ago. i just dusted the cobwebs off and it was like it never left.

Yeah marc777. I toatally agree. I could think of a number of players who just keep getting better. Beck being one of them. I'm a way better player than I was in my twenties but nowhere near as good as I should be considering how long I've been playing. I'm looking forward to improving not slacking!

Good observation about Cobham. Double kicks became his niche. There are so many other things Vinnie does better than Billy though. Billy stated in an interview several years back that it was Vinnie that other drummers should be listening to as someone who had great command of a drumset.

well vinnie can actually play ?hings of greater difficulty. dave is polished as in not sloppy, but its not like he's a show off. i find a lot of his rhythmic ideas really interesting and fresh. especially hs use of brushes, the sounds he brings out of skins/cymbals etc. I don't think weckl is better collaiuta though (personally i prefer weckl), because at this level of musicianship it pretty much comes down to an opinion

and for the record, the md polls are less than brillian in this respect. how is vinnie voted the best all around drummer but the only places he pops up is 5th out of 5 in FUSION (when thats kind of his gig and) #1 in the studio. then neil peart is last in progressive (which is his thing) and FIRST in rock. and the only cat that thomas lang pops up in is clinician. only explanation i can come up with is category by affiliation, but its inconsistent across the board.

Either way you slice it, this guy, here, is fucking "Un-caged", "Un-Limited", just a fucking animal on the drums!, a force with nothing stopping him! That's why we all LOVE to see him on the drums! That's why Weckl bores me. Vinnie just fucking says, "This is It!", with No-Holds-Barred. He holds Nothing back here. He gives it Everything! I LOVE that! I rarely see that in a drummer! Most of us, myself included, are controlled and safe! Vinnie is the complete antithesis of that! Just Go!

Don't get me wrong at all, to be even as competent as vinnie would be a godsend, I admire him incredibly, but with Jeff Beck he plays off the beat a little too much. But that is just one show, I otherwise love his playing, and am always impressed with his creativity, style, technique and sheer talent. sorry to have flipped, but like Vinnie says, Kill your idols meaning believe in yourself, your abilities and the courage to blaze your own path....cheers to you too Kirk:)

Seriously awesome stuff from Vinnie. His band is cool too, Michael Landau (guitar) is a tasteful player. David Garfield (keys) is alright, but he's a bit awkward onstage, especially when he tries to get everyone to clap, hahaha. It's like, the audience didn't buy it. I guess it doesn't help that the song is constantly dropping 16th notes so they don't know where to clap!

DON'T GET ME WRONG!!!! Vinnie is a god and I've always loved his playing. PLEASE don't take me saying that as being some holier than thou drum know it all because while I'm also an experienced drummer I would die to play with his kind of conviction. Now that said the mistakes are obviously not glaring. 22 seconds and 42 seconds are just wierd glitches. That take away from the fluidity he displays through the rest of the solo. Please don't take this the wrong way. Let me know what you think. :)

that pitch correction is called autotune, and i'm not a fan of that either (it's kinda flashy right now). i know some guys who like jberlin, and i won't ever say they're wrong. but what i wanna say is that comparing virtuosity with producing music is 2 other worlds. don't you think producing is hard work? i'm sure there are some lazy guys, using templates and presets, but when you consider electronic music, pick some1 who works hard, like dj shadow, he can't play, but he's a creative genius.

PS: That thing above is just a little jam intro for a bass lesson video. Berlin was trained on the violin and then did some of the greatest bass melodies and solos known to those who like fusion and jazz (for instance "water on the brain" on Allan Holdsworth's record "Road Games". Incredibly fantastic solo... It's a matter of taste. Some people only listen to techno.

It's about the spirit, the technical and musical abilities of those great musicians, and the live (life) feel to it. All matter of taste of course, but I'd rather take my hat off to hard working, real musicians than computer generated, cold and edited music with automatet voice pitch correction (don't know the proper term in english) etc. Apart from that, I found Toxic mediocre, but "Hit me one more time" a very good melody (written by some ghost hit writers of course).Passion against big bucks.

what? did you listen to toxic? that's a great song. spears has a decent and innovative writers and proucers team behind her. you might not like the overall commercial approach of her music, but you can still listen. when i listen to this i hear technical abilities, but i can't hear a decent one, it's so not tight! and jeff's sound is blurry played on the bridge pickup but so thin on the g string. i dont think the comparison between compressed poptunes and live fusion is a very good idea.

i don't like their groove, so uptight, it's making me nervous. jeff's solo's are technical really difficult, but let's face it, this belongs more in the region 'showing off skills' rather than building a quality groove/nice tune. although it's not really my kind of music i would prefer jaco or marcus miller 1000x, because they have a very good groove and also because the music is more than just showing off chops.

Vinnie has played on over 1000 albums, played on the Joan Rivers show, toured with Sting, currently tours with Jeff Beck and Herbie Hancock, and can play any style of music. Some people have a problem with Vinnie. Many People dont seem to appreciate his playing when he does complex moves and plays around with the tempo and meter. His drumming may seem really weird sometimes if people dont know what he's doing. I really enjoy his playing even more now that I'm understanding rhythms quite better. WTF is he playing out of time??? JK. I took long to understand his soloing approach and many things he does. He likes to challenge the audience clapping. he got me lost!
