so nice to finally see this guy in action. never knew he used fingers instead of pick or that he controlled the whammy the way he does. Eric Johnson says Beck virtually created the bending technique that emulates a synthesizer roller wheel. always thought he did it by pulling the strings. i still love his work on Stevie Wonder's Talking Book album, especially his unforgettable solo on "Looking For Another Pure Love."

I have a 91 strus plus with the jeff beck roller nut and lace sensors. I play through a jcm 900 marshall 2 by 12 unit. I use a pick for jazz and faststuff only. This set up is close to what jefff beck uses . Jeff uses a quad boxes and marsahll vale heads. he does use a a distorition box, a delay and a wah.The rest is in his hands. Only jeff beck makes me say " how the hell is he doing that??!"

well, you should pick one size of strings and stick with them; changing string tension on a stratocaster messes with the action and tremolo tension. So pick a size you like, put them on and get them stretched out. Then tune your guitar perfectly, dive bomb a few times, and see how it ended up being tuned. If you're going sharp loosen your spring tension, if you're going flat tighten it. Retune your guitar and repeat again and again until your guitar can survive a few divebombs.

it's all in the setup the nut helps, locking tuners experiment with different spring tensions in the back of the strat, tune it, dive bomb it, see which side goes sharp or flat and adjust, do it again and again until it stays in tune through a few dive bombs. don't worry about your springs being slightly uneven in the back; they should be.

beck was awesome and surely deserve credit for a lot, but like many of the original rock legends like jimi,they have been surpassed in overall guitar talent by many- nothing can be taken way from these guys, but like in sports , humans are getting better physically and music is no different- songs were better in the 60's and 70's by far , but musicians are better now- way better- satriani and steve morse can run rings around jeff beck

Listen back to Beck before Vai et al appeared and his style is nothing like this at all - not that he hasn't always been a good guitar player, but, unlike page [who said he tried to play like EVH and couldn't] Beck has kept up to date. Personally I like the mix of old school / new school that he plays these days.

Not really, Jimi was playing with Isley Brothers doing soul until he heard Jeff in the Yardbirds. Then he started using the whammy. Beck went on to fusion and now he's back after 40 years to using the whammy, but with a difference. A whole lot of flesh and finger (no pick) like the old blues greats. Jimi was a big fan of Jeff, and vice versa. They took from each other. Jimi ruled in feedback, Jeff just kept going on to newer stuff. Like his first love - hotrod cars, Jeff races on.

Beck was recording long before Jimi! I do not doubt Jimi was 'doing his thing' but it was not before Beck on any music anyone can 'check'. Jimi just did a heck of a lot more of it at the time. Something Beck surely took inspiration from... like everybody else. But Beck was certainly the most creative player before Hendrix BURST onto the scene. Check the music.

Beck and Vinnie both looked very happy playing together during this festival. Vinnie is a happy guy anyway but Beck tends to be a dour character, he is a perfectionist. But he he and Vinnie were smiling a lot playing together. I never saw Beck look so happy in a concert. I wish I had been there for that concert that entire set was unbelieable.

It is awful to get into an argument of Vinnie versus Billy Cobham. I saw Cobham live a number of times during his peak in the 1970's. There was only one, and will only ever be one drummer like Cobham was THEN. However Vinnie is the greatest drummer playing today. It is also fair to say that Vinnie is a more versatile drummer than Billy ever was. For pur, blinding, inhuman technique on the drums I give it to Cobham. How many times have you seen Billy play this song live? I've seen Billy play this song plenty of times back in the 70's. Billy did things that were pretty much impossible. Billy's style is totally different than Vinnie's. Vinnie is playing a more rock version with his tuning. Billy plays with a smile on his face. Vinnie is playing with forcing it too much.

I've never made attention that Jeff Beck was playing with his fingers,in all cases no pick for this song,& he makes nearly all with his thumb!!!I use to prefer that, a pick sounds for me a little" hard "(for some songs, it's necessary,I admit) but prefer fingers that give a hotter sound! Yes...I was watching American Idol and when they announced Jeff Beck I almost fell out of my chair. Who would have thought that he would have been on the most popular prime time television show with Kellie Clarkson. He played great. What an unexpected treat!

Agreed! In fact, Pino Palladino played in this same tour (I don't know if before or after Randy) and I'm sure he kicked some serious ass with his fretless bass. He probably didn't slap or played funky/groovy as Randy does, but he happens to be my favourite bass player out there, although some would say less "spectacular" (?) than Marcus or Victor... There's room for everybody, but some dudes just don't get it and can't get enough of comparing all the time.

A great example of a never-ending progressive musician who hates getting stale. This is his resurrection with a new generation of fans. 5 decades, this guy's been going. I met him in the 70's (Westborne Terrace, Paddington), while crossing the beacon. He was in his stingray. We talked. He was shy for a superstar.
