I gotta agree, Jimi is like a god of rock and Stevie is like a jesus of rock (both very well trained and influenced from the blues masters), but they both made a Fender Stratocaster what it is today, a definitive rock instrument! Both are the best electric guitar players ever. Also, as you said about Jimi never playing a song same way twice, same goes for Stevie. Stevie too never played a song same way twice. It was one of his signatures. Every show he did he did was different.

HE DID NOT KNOW HOW TO READ SHEET MUSIC. he played by ear completely. and no. hendrix is still better. i love them both. but hendrix is the god of rock, vaughan would be his jesus, his bluesy, well-mannered jesus. and another bit of trivia.hendrix took a rightey guitar and re-strung it to be a lefty, and SRV took a left guitar and restrung it to be a rightey. and hendrix never played anythign twice. he payed the same songs. but always played them differently

He's playing down the Merseybeat influence. I don't really hear anything else in his playing. it's basically Gerry and the Pacemakers played on a strat. If you slow scuttlebuttin down a bit you can hear him playing "Ferry Cross the Mersey". (SRV was such a force of nature and a master of his craft - so sorely missed...)

Hendrix was incredible for his time,but that's like saying Synyster Gates is one of the best because of his age. Robin Trower-one of his "day of the eagle"solos is impossibly fast,I can't even see his fingers moving at some points. And RZK gained my respect when he formed thesolo project Emigrate.His solo for "this is what" is unique,it almost sound random,but that's only because there is absolutely NO repeatition.And his solo for Rammstein live volkerbal was incredible for melody but not bps.

If you count Zep as early metal than there is an acception. r rhoads was a trip. kinda liked him. took lesons the complete time he was playing with ozzy. skinny as a rail and perfect for rock stardom. big bummer 'bout the early accident resulting in death. Who gives a fuck about songwritting? Yeah he may not be the best songwritter ever, and he played many great covers, but at the same time he wrote many great songs of his own that is epical and amazing! Wow... Such a genuine guy! I remember he died when I was 5 and being from Houston,TX, they played a lot of his stuff on the radio. I remember this guy who worked for my dad told me once about how he saw SRV at Fitzgeralds (a local Houston club) in 1983 and SRV did a few encores and the cops finally came out around 4 to shut the place down. The club is an old house on the corner of an old neighborhood. But hey, if SRV was jamming all night outside my window, I wouldn't mind! :-)

lets just take each for what they were. hendrix came along and did his thing, heavy and unpredictable yet full of that groove. srv came along, revived it all with fresh air and a booming, godly voice. sounds like glass breaking everytime. The best thing starts from the first solo, from 2:41. Everything till than was amazing and really nice, but that first solo and afterwards is mindblowing! Also that note at 2:59 has to be the purest, rawest and most passionate note ever played on a electric guitar! BTW. You can't really say that this is a copy. This is a tribute to Jimi Hendrix, and SRV did this song in his own way and he performed it with his own thing and style, so there is no copying at all.

Everything else aside- the bend to the high E at 3:14 has to be the purest note ever played. Good, God- the tone, the attack. Yes, its a cop on the orginal Hendrix but it is one of those rare musical moments that reaffirms my faith in the world. Uhhh, that was a pretty lame and worthless comment. He was influenced by him like every other guitar player on this planet and covered a couple of his songs as showing respect and tribute to him. That is all and that ain't no big deal. But most importantly he was himself all the time and he had his own unique style. Stevie took his hat off and put it on his mike, so when he reaches out he's pulling it off of his mike; no ones throwing it to him.
