I do 't buy the 'dylan's the best mantra'. personally, i find joni to be superior musically, vocally, and lyrically. I'm not sure about young and dylan - they both have their place. heck gordon lightfoot's as good as either of them in my opinion.

Both Young and Dylan have managed to sell enough records to finance very comfortable lifestyles, while exploring a wide range of musical styles and remaining true to their own muses. Admirable accomplishments for both of them, to be sure.

While both of them have achieved greater artistic reputations than commercial success, to say that Harvest was Young's only big seller is just wrong. For one thing, he was a member of two successful bands, Buffalo Springfield and CSNY. As a solo artist, Everybody Knows this is Nowhere, After the Gold Rush, Comes a Time, Rust Never Sleeps, Live Rust, and Harvest Moon are just a few of his gold, platinum, and multi-platinum albums.

Young is a more powerful lead electric guitarist. When it comes to acoustic, I actually think that Dylan is more versatile and accomplished. I guess we won't discuss their relative merits on keyboards and harmonica, as neither of them sets the world on fire there! lol

Lol shut up teach417. You are blatantly a music nazi. You both like Neil Young and Bob Dylan? Ok agreed. Was that so hard?
By: smoke117. on 17 Nov 08, 03:30:30
"to say* that Neil Young is a better guitarist acoustic or electric."
By: smoke117. on 17 Nov 08, 03:28:13
I may have jumped the gun on his guitar playing and I've been getting a lot of flack for it from a few people posting comments, but in my defense I was extremely shit faced when I went on my multiple comment essay, so I wasn't all there lol. I'll digress and say he's a pretty good acoustic guitar player, but either way I still think it's definitely a truthful statement to make that Neil Young is a better guitarist acoustic or electric.
By: smoke117. on 17 Nov 08, 03:25:53
That's ridiculous. Besides Harvest, Neil has never had much particular commercial success. I'm not going to look up the numbers because I'm too lazy to, but I bet Bob Dylan definitely has had more hits and commercial success then Neil Young...BUT one of the main things about both of these guys is that they could give a fuck about commercial success...they are TRUE ARTISTS and go where their muse takes them.
By: Teach417. on 16 Nov 08, 23:27:26
Wrong again. New artists are still listening to Dylan, still covering his music. It would be more accurate to say that Young has had more commercial success, and his music is better known to the general public, while Dylan is more influential with musicians. It's similar to how the public loves the Eagles, but musicians love The Band.
By: Teach417. on 16 Nov 08, 23:23:46
You're unusually ignorant about Dylan. He's a student of American music in all its myriad forms, and they have all been part of his music. He's been influenced by everyone from Muddy Waters to Hank Williams, Buddy Holly to Bing Crosby. Blues, country, rock, swing, jazz, show tunes -- they're all part of his music. It's amazing how someone who knows so little can have so much to say.
By: Teach417. on 16 Nov 08, 23:10:05
I'm guessing you're way too young to have seen Dylan solo before he first started playing rock. I saw him in '64, and he was an incredible solo performer, absolutely mesmerizing. Also, if you listen to his first few albums, or the solo ones he did in the early 90s, he's really quite a good acoustic guitarist. His lead electric work is kind of boring, but he can really pick the flat top.

Carol King and Cat Stevens? I know you think that you're entitled to your opinion, but you're wrong. Calling them the two best songwriters of the 60s/70s is absolutely ridiculous. That's like saying the Monkees were better than the Beatles. Carol King could write a decent pop song, Stevens wrote lame psuedo hippie bullsh!t. Neither of them was among the best, or most important, songwriters of their era.
By: Teach417. on 16 Nov 08, 22:50:43
You could say that Dylan created a new league in songwriting, but there are a few others who've accepted the challenge and joined it. Paul Simon, Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, Joni Mitchell and Bruce Springsteen all come to mind, as well as Young. Dylan's the best, but those guys and a few others have also attained great heights.
By: Teach417. on 16 Nov 08, 22:47:17
Yeah, it's a shame how liberals like FDR, JFK, Dylan, Bill Clinton weren't very articulate. And conservatives like Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Cheney, never hurl invectives at those they disagree with. Dumbass, come out of your neo-con fantasy world and join up with reality sometime.

i dunno where yr from but me and all my mates love neil young and even here neil is giving a nod to bobs otherworldly-ness .young we can understand but dylan?

There's a song being written around us as we speak.
By: smoke117. on 14 Nov 08, 21:57:43
In the end it doesn't even matter, I love Bob Dylan, he is my 2nd favorite solo artists after Neil (who is my favorite all time anything), so the arguments are kind of pointless. It just annoys me that general public doesn't respect Neil Young as much as they should. EVERYONE knows Bob Dylan, but Neil Young flies under the radar sometimes and that to me is just a travesty considering he is one of those rare musical geniuses to have come around.
By: gibbogle. on 14 Nov 08, 20:40:09
Hundreds of PhD theses later, nobody really understands Dylan, not even Dylan, I suspect.
By: philosophyscholar. on 14 Nov 08, 20:32:48
I know far more about bob then neil but I know for a fact that bob has deviated in his music contrary to what smoke117 thinks and anybody who truly listen to bob knows that. Smoke117 could check out No Direction Home, which is on youtube to see for himself how wrong he is or maybe he just doesn't comprehend the word folk. Also anyone who goes beyond just listening and investigates how their favorite musicians evolved can better understand the messages in the songs.

Some Dylan is definitely superior to some other Dylan. You can have Slow Train Coming, but Blood On The Tracks is unmatched.
By: gibbogle. on 13 Nov 08, 05:13:24
Hard to see Young having Dylan's influence. BTW I'm sure Dylan himself would dispute your assertion that he's "folk to his core". He's made some great rock music. I guess it's just a matter of semantics - he's a genius whichever way you slice it.

Dylan changed the landscape of music more than any other performer. Highway 61 is the most important album in modern music. Without that album the Beatles would never have had the drastic change they did in the mid to late sixties. He wrote like a folk musician and composed and played like a rock musician.
