This interview was great. I've seen tons of interviews with Neil, and I think this is one of the most succinct and insightful. Mark Kermode, the interviewer, is actually a very insightful film critic, and I think he brings a lot of fresh energy here being a new convert. Brilliant.

It's supposed to be a morally neutral statement, I think. Shortly after that he references the "decay..destruction that time has wrought on the American Dream of greatness." Seems like what he's saying is more that all these parts, good *and* bad, are the cogs in modern America. Each is equally necessary to acknowledge if you're trying to take a realistic "snapshot" of America today.

Poor old Mark, although he is a theatre/film/TV/music critic, or something like that, it does take a bit of time for the penny to drop, and then when it does he tends to go overboard like he has found the true meaning of life.

Truth is, the culture of corruption and dishonesty, that has hurt America so badly the last 8 years is playing an even larger role in McCains campaign. At least 177 lobbyists have been on his campaingn staff. But its no match for this grassroots movement. We are not buying the mix of lies and double-speak.
