I really like the speed, but I do agree that some of the chords seem to get chopped off. Or just the pedaling was not allowed to carry over as he did some of the higher arpeggios. There was some punching of the keyboard at the end;but overall a very powerful performance!

a great performance, but what a rigidly mechanical, angry and disappointing ending that was. he completely ruined a tender part of the music: right at 6:14 he started working the piano like it was a punching-bag. i don't know why he did it, it's not like him. i love his Chopin performances and believe in him like i always have, but what he displayed at the end was not Chopin, and i wouldn't want to have that performance on CD. feel free to hate me.

The judges could have chosen not to award 1st place at all, as they did in 1990 and 95. That point remains relevant even without hearing the others. But on to the claim that she rushed the ending. The score calls for "Tempo I" at the end, "Presto con fuoco." Yes, there is room for interpretation, but to me "con fuoco" (with fire) implies a presto on the fast side. Perhaps the performances you first encountered took a bit of liberty on the slow side. Of course, I'm biased. I like Martha.

My favorite recording of this piece! Martha Argerich won the piano competition and a guy named Arthur Moreira-Lima from Brazil won the second place. I happen to know Mr. Lima's work as a pianist and I must say, this is far much better than Lima's recording. This video is also very glamourous (black and white, young famous pianist, important competition etc.) This is the only recording of this Scherzo that can hypnotize me and for me, this is music! Thanks for sharing!

Actually, band instruments, a huge number of which are made out of metal, become more and more corroded/worn over time. Yes, a string instrument that isn't played becomes more fragile after decades of not being used, but strads have constantly been played by various violinists since they were made. This causes the wood to harden and become more durable, in fact. However, even if you were right, you said that the STRINGS become more fragile. Which makes no sense.

(continued) It's mostly a matter of taste. Yes, strads are definitely among the finest violins ever made, but it does not mean they are the best hands-down. Why do you think performers like Heifetz chose to play mainly on guarneris? Heifetz preferred his guarneri because it had a more robust sound than his strad. If strads were ultimately and undeniably better, then everyone would play on strads.

Lol you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. No matter how old an instrument is the strings will not be any more or less fragile. Szeryng donates his strad because did not like it as much as his Guarneri. I like Guarneris better myself personally. I love the darkness of their sound. Strads are not better, just more reputable. Tastes change over time. In recent years strads have been the most popular violins. But 150 years ago, Amatis were considered the finest violins.

When talking about price you must limit your criteria to public and private sellers. Sure, strads may have sold for millions more than guarneris in private affairs but in public auctions the guarneris have sold for more still. The strings are fragile? The strings are modern. No violin will have old strings unless it is not used and not maintained. And many people play on strads just as hard as guarneris. Look at Akiko Suwanai and other greats. (continued)

then one has a question: why play that fast when one knows that he/she would make mistakes at that tempo? I love Menuhin's slower pieces because they show, like you said, the "enthusiasm and spirit". Even in this video he shows such qualities in the slow part but I don't see any spirit in the fast part. He doesn't seem to care whether he is playing correctly or not. that's why people are criticizing menuhin.
