Hoagy Charmichael (from Bloomington Indiana)wrote Star Dust in 1927 at "The Gables" across from the Indiana University School of Law (JD '27). It was recorded and became and instamental hit. In 1929, with lyrics by Mitchell Parish, and it was an even bigger hit. At the time it was the most recorded song ever. By the time Nat Cole recorded it Hoagy was one of the most famouse song writers of all time, and a movie and TV star as well.

I think this might be the most beautiful song ever done. Coles version here isn't close to Willies. The guitar sounds like an angels harp. You listen to Willie long enough you come to realize he is one of the great guitar pickers and he knew how to use his voice in a fashion few could ever learn.

My wife and I stayed at the stardust in april, 1983, for our honeymoon. We went back to Vegas this year for our 25th anniversary. Vegas 1983 no longer exists. Only one building still stands from that time. Even the frontier, next to the stardust, is gone. Plenty of new construction was going on, too. Vegas is unreal.

I hate to digress from the topic of this video, which is Shaw's flawless recording of "Stardust", but I'm astonished at your evaluation. Crosby's recording was good, not exceptional. Cole's version was definitive and unforgettable. I say this as a fan of both-- Crosby's was recorded in 1931 when he was in great voice. However, his rather playful habits with the tempo detract from the beauty of the melody, as well as the longing description of the lyrics.

This is one of the better instrumental versions of Stardust. It preserves the melodic line. Other versions "deconstruct" the melody too much, destroying its beauty. I'll never understand why so many talented musicians feel compelled to depart from the score so far that the melodic spine is lost. I suppose they get bored playing it "straight." That's unfortunate. I certainly agree with everybody on this beautiful song! I've not heard this song played instrumentaly but, I heard it vocaly by Nat King Cole and other and this is truly a favorite to be treasured forever. I love this song, too. I can imagine driving up Division St. back in the 1930's in Spokane. Or taking the street car up Grand Blvd. to Manito Park so many years ago. He left Spokane for a great career in Lost Angeles (good move). Now he is forever one of our greatest musicians, at least from us NW United States' opinions.

This is Crosby's Brunswick recording from 10/1931 w/Victor Young's Orchestra. Jimmy Dorsey on Eb Alto Sax, Tronbone - Tommy Dorsey. You can just about make out that it's him on the 'upbeat video' ~ he must have developed the typical 'Bing croon' later. I listened to him singing 'Baby it's cold outside' with Doris Day ~ and really doubted that it was him. He was one of my Dad's favourites, so we grew up with him. WOW! I'm blown away! I recently discovered many abandoned boxes of hundreds of old LP's (78's, 33's, 45's) sitting in the back of a bookstores parking lot as I was walking my dog tonight... so I swung by with my car and took them all home. Many are Bing Crosby records in mint condition! Which is why I came here to listen and find out more about him. Fascinating!
