This did help me though, the preasures of homelife and college also expectations plus things that I need to do and everyday troubles are swarming through my head and mixed with my held in emotions it is horriable. Basically, yes. "Jazz minor" is another name for the melodic minor. Same scale degrees. However, what we commonly refer to as "melodic minor" is really an ASCENDING melodic minor in traditional theory. The traditional m.m. scale raises the 6th and 7th when ascending, but lowers the 6th and 7th when descending, like a natural minor.

Hi patcatyak, there are four tension-notes in this scale,used in this situation 9-,9+,-13, 5- that sound interesting, also try using the concept of playing A minor pentatonic over F# 7(alt) there you get the 7 and these alterations(5 notes in all=penta)In the beginning it sounds more abstract,but once you get the sound in your ears,quite interesting. Start on the 1st note of the scale - (G) - proceed to play the next 3 notes of the scale in succession - (so.. g,a,b,c) then start from the 2nd note in the scale (a), and do the same - (abcd). Then the 3rd... go all the way up the scale using this pattern. and then come back down, doing the same.

Learn the notes on the fret board and play the scales according to the note or get the tabs from some web site. Don't just play 1234!!! Thats more like a chromatic scale not a major scale. Its like in the piano when you play C major or any other major scale. Follow the same pattern.

Check out Justins SC-020 and SC-021 or any other "major scale" lesson. There the major scale is explained, which is in fact the attempt to play only notes that are in a certain key (e.g. C major key: C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C). You have to master the scale first before you can start to improvise. I know, learning it can be dry and frustrating, but it will pay out. Keep it up!!

damn, i dont get that "scale thing"... i play just 1,2,3,4....1,2,3,4...1,2,3,4 each string. your doing something like 1,2,4...2,3,4,...1,2,3.. and osmething like that, can osmeone explain? And when you have to go backwards,do you have to play 1,2,3 -->3,2,1? :D thanks bye

Start with the tonic note. That's the first note of the scale. 'C' if you're playing a C scale - 'D' if you're playing a D scale, and so on. You should also end on the tonic note.

emixolydian technically it's the #4 and the b5 are the same note, but it's important to write them differently because the functions of the augmented fourth and the diminished fifth are different.

I'm a little confused, and i think I missed something about the differences between the harmonic, and melodic minor keys, but when you demonstrated that "arabian" feel of the min-harm scale and mentioned that the old church had banned certain intervals, it made me think of the crusades.

i used to think the circle of fiths showed relevance in the way they sounded not by how many flats or sharps it had lol is there any such chart that shows relevance in sound? for example a minor and c#minor

i have 2 doubts: 1. what if the major scale has sharps, like for example G major. to play the natural E minor, i'd have to play F# and all other notes in natural, right? 2. are there also natural, harmonic and melodic major scales? btw, thanks for teaching me how to fish xD. you and your hair are awesome.
